NEBOSH General Certificate Course / National Examination Board For Occupational Safety and Health.

Health and Safety appointed representatives are faced with a constant battle against ever changing Health and Safety legislation and the impact on their respective organisations. In addition EC regulations stipulate that Health and Safety representatives must be “competent” to perform the role.

The NEBOSH certificate course upon completion is recognised as providing most of this competence. Along with providing delegates with the skills to interpret and implement current health and Safety requirements.

Course Objectives:

Nebosh aims to improve delegates ability to identify hazards and recommend appropriate action by:
Developing the ability to investigate accidents and make cost effective recommendations.
Developing a practical understanding of safety legislation.
Developing an appreciation of human and organisational problems and possible solutions.

Entry Requirements:
No formal entry requirements though a learners agreement must be completed prior to commencing the course.

The NEBOSH National General Certificate is based on UK legislation.  The course is made is made up of three individual units, which all must be successfully completed within a five year period to achieve the NEB0SH National General Certificate Qualification:

Unit NGC1: Management of Health and Safety

  • Foundations in Health and Safety
  • Plan
  • Do
  • Check
  • Act
  • Assessed by a two hour written exam

Unit GC2: Control of Workplace Hazards

  • Workplace Hazards and Risk Control
  • Transport Hazards and Risk Control
  • Musculoskeletal Hazards and Risk Control
  • Work Equipment Hazards and Risk Control
  • Electrical Safety
  • Fire Safety
  • Chemical and Biological Health Hazards and Risk Control
  • Physical and Psychological Health Hazards and Risk Control

Assessed by a two hour written exam

Unit NGC3 is assessed by one two-hour practical examination carried out in the candidate’s own workplace. The assessment must normally be taken within 14 days of a written examination. The practical examination is internally assessed by SPG Safety Limited and is externally moderated by NEBOSH

To pass the National Certificate candidates must average at least 50% on the written papers covering Part NGC1 and Part NGC2 (with not less than 45% on either paper), and at least 60% on the practical assessment Part NGC3.

NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety Course / National Examination Board For Occupational Safety and Health.

Course Duration:

The Nebosh International Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is based over ten days with one revision day prior to the exam day. The exam day consists of two x two-hour written examinations one in the morning and the second examination in the afternoon.

Week 1 – Management of International Health & Safety (IGC1)

  • Element 1: Foundations In Health & Safety
  • Element 2: Health & Safety Management Systems 1 – Plan
  • Element 3: Health & Safety Management Systems 2 – Do
  • Element 4: Health & Safety Management Systems 3 – Check
  • Element 5: Health & Safety Management Systems 4 – Act

Unit 2 – Control of International Workplace Hazards (GC2)

  • Element 1: Workplace Hazards & Risk Control
  • Element 2: Transport Hazards & Risk Control
  • Element 3: Musculoskeletal Hazards & Risk Control
  • Element 4: Work Equipment Hazards & Risk Control
  • Element 5: Electrical Safety
  • Element 6: Fire Safety
  • Element 7: Chemical & Biological Health Hazards & Risk Control
  • Element 8: Physical & Psychological Health Hazards & Risk Control

Certification:

Following the successful completion of each of the written examination the candidate will receive from Nebosh (Awarding Body) a unit certificate to demonstrate that the candidate has met the unit criteria. All candidates will have to undertake a practical assessment which is to be carried out in their own workplace or a in a workplace that they can gain access to.

After the successful completion of all three elements (The two theory examinations & the practical examinations the candidate will be awarded a certificate parchment from Nebosh.

When the candidate has been awarded a certificate parchment then they can apply to the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health as they have met the requirements for the designatory letters of TechIosh. In addition, it is accepted by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management for Associate Membership.
